Cartagena de Indias

After Dark

Beautiful night view showing the Bahia de las Animas, Cartagena's old harbor. Framed by the new Convention Center on the left, San Pedro Claver Church's inmense Dome on top, the clock tower on the right and the Paseo de los Martires on the bottom

View from above

Cartagena bay, with the Bocagrande Penninsula guarding it from the ocean. On the forefront: Castillogrande, to the left: the horseshoe shaped inlet called: "El Laguito", with its five star hotels, jewerly stores and casinos, behind it: two miles of beaches and high rise apartment buildings. Across the bay: the islet of Manga, the little hill of "La Popa" and to the left: the historic old city.

Torre de la Catedral

The beautiful, tall, red Cathedral spire towers up from the old city. Although built in the mid 1700's, it stands majestic today, embelleshing the medieval church building it was made to be a part of.

Extramuros

The first line of defense the Spanish Crown had to defend Cartagena from a land attack was a formidable wall armed with sixty long range cannons and a deep fose. On the forefront you can see the thick wall next to the water, behind it: Getsemani, where the laborers and the artisans lived. And on the distance: San Pedro Claver's spectacular yellow dome.
