Cartagena de Indias
San Felipe de Barajas
The enormous mighty fortress of San Felipe, a marvel of medieval military engineering. British Admiral sir Edward Vernon and Lawrence Washington (half brother to George) tried to take Cartagena for Britain in 1739. 180 ships and 28,000 men were no match for this fort. La India Catalina
Bronze sculpture of "Catalina", legendary Caribe woman who helped the conquistadores tame the natives and take posession of what today is Cartagena. An award with the same name is given out every year to winners at the Cartagena International Film Festival. The little statue presented was the inspiration for this monument. Santo Domingo
Oldest church in the city, built in the 1500's. It doubles as a bomb shelter and is itself a mini fortress. The bell tower appears crooked because it was also a watch tower. Aligned exactly with the four cardinal points, this feature helped to better asess where from the English pirate ships were coming. Legend has it, it was the devil himself who turned it.
